Results Round Up From Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Cwmbran, Llanelli & Swansea

In another busy weekend of action for the club members who were spread far and wide throughout the UK:

Saturday 12th March were the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham, a West Wales team was selected with a few Swansea Harriers amongst them. No doubt once again the main highlight of the day and arguably the weekend was the win for Dewi Griffiths who became the first Welshman to win the senior men’s UK Inter-Counties Cross Country title since 1997, Dewi won the U15 boys back in 2006 too! The meeting was also the final one of the British Cross Challenge series which Dewi won last year too, therefore as last time the tea and coffee in the club café is on Dewi, for his coach and training partners this week from the prize money! Also at Birmingham were U15B Francis Lewis (289th); U13B Ethan Lee (134th); U13G Caitlin Gwyther having a great run for (21st); U13G Ashleigh Willis (34th); U13G Darcie Bass (105th); U15G Freya Reese (298th) and SW Helen Marshall (158th). It was great to see them all participating in such large fields of runners against the top cross country runners in all age groups from throughout the UK. Very many congratulations to them all, click here for the full results.

Sunday 13th March was the Trafford 10K at Manchester where U20M Christian Lovatt edged even closer to the sub 30 minute 10K barrier with a more than useful superb time of (30.14) for an U20M; Chris Carpanini was just behind 48th in an equally impressive (30.48); Matthew Rees set a lifetime best of (32.15) as did SW Alaw Beynon-Thomas (35.29). Christian, Chris and Alaw were also representing Wales competing against teams from the North of England, the Midlands, and the UK Armed Forces. Very well done to all four on such fantastic runs, click here for the full results.

The weekend of Saturday and Sunday 12th & 13th March were the England Athletics Combined Events Championships at Sheffield, it was great to see 3 athletes make the very long journey to take part against the UK’s top multi eventers, and didn’t they do well, all three coming home with SILVER medals in the Welsh Championships which were incorporated into the event. U17M Michael Thompson placed 14th overall in the heptathlon with a score of 3852 points, setting personal bests in the 1000m (3.24.00); 60m Hurdles (8.66) High Jump (1.66m); Long Jump (5.42m); Shot (1.21m). U15B George Dun placed 10th in the Pentathlon with 1997 points setting personal bests in the 800m (2.26.96); 60m Hurdles (10.18); High Jump (1.53m). U17W Josie Sivak 19th in the Pentathlon with 2795 points setting personal bests in the High Jump (1.45m); Shot (11.07m). Very well done to all three click here for the full results.

Sunday 13th March was the Welsh Sports Hall Athletics Regional Final at Cwmbran Leisure Centre. It was fantastic to see so many Swansea Harriers representing the Afan Nedd Tawe School District. Team wise the U13G were most successful, placing 2nd overall for team SILVER just missing out by a few points to go to the UK Final at Manchester. The U15B team had a great result to finish joint 3rd in BRONZE, the U13B were 6th; despite an incomplete team the U15G finished a superb 5th with just two thirds of a team leaving them to wonder what could have been with such great potential initially. In the U15 all rounder element of the day U15G Hannah Davies (St Josephs) won a magnificent BRONZE despite suffering with a cold. U15B Brynmor Clements (YG Gwyr) showed his versatility and can do a lot more than just throw things a long way placing an excellent equal 10th. Individually there were three wins for the team: U15G Hannah Davies (2.28m) Standing Long Jump; U15B Brynmor Clements (12.91m) Shot and Jamie Holland (YG Gwyr) (10.20m) Shot.
