Results Round Up From Sheffield, Pembrey, Lee Valley & Elsewhere

The weekend of Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February were the English (UK) Indoor U15, U17 & U20 Athletics Championships held at Sheffield. It was great to see five Swansea Harriers achieve the very tough entry standards and then make the very long journey to test themselves against the UK’s best juniors. The fantastic five were; U17M Thomas Payne who got as far as the 60m semi final eventually placing 5th (7.12); U20M Steffan Jones who was 4th in his 200m heat (22.74) & 4th too in his 400m semi final (50.44) after running a personal best in his heat ; U17W Macey Morris who made it all the way to the final of the 200m and just missed out on a medal in 4th (25.48); U20M Tomos Slade just like Macey came extremely close to medalling with a 4th place in the final of the 60m Hurdles (8.06); U15G Katelyn Thomas got to the semi final of the 60m Hurdles placing 8th, her best time came in her heat (9.69); the main highlight of the weekend was a GOLD medal for U15B William Trott in the Pole Vault of (3.70m) in the process breaking his own all time Welsh U15B indoor record to become UK champion, well done William! Saturday 23rd February were the Welsh Clubs Cross Country Championships held at warm and breezy Pembrey Country Park. The scheduling of half term gave the team managers a very challenging task rounding up as many athletes as they could, and they did very to finish full teams in most age categories. As ever we had a very successful championships with several individual and team medals won. In race order here are our highlights;
U13B: the team placed 5th with Morgan Willis first home in 13th followed home by; 15th Mathew Lewis; 32nd Jed Howard-Jones and 33rd Noah Russell.
U13G: incomplete team, our three available runners were 17th Mai Davies; 19th Kaitlyn Jones and 36th Sophie Hartley-Green.
U15B: incomplete team, our three available runners were 17th Aled Tumelty; 18th Tom Attwood and 24th Miles Hill.
U15G: incomplete team, our three available runners were 10th Daisy Thompson; 18th Ella Davies and 26th Abbie Hall.
SW & Masters: Seniors showed what fantastic strength in depth we have with two team medals of GOLD & BRONZE, with 6th Alaw Beynon-Thomas; 7th Sian Edwards; 10th Helen Marshall; 13th Rachel Davies; 17th Abigayle Goodrick-Latham; 21st Hannah Munday 22nd Sian Kirk and 24th Jemima Osborn. Our MW45+ won team BRONZE too with the terrific trio of Sian Phillips, Kelly Gipson & Angela Delaney. Our only individual medal this year came from MW35+ Helen Marshall with a fine GOLD!
U11B the team placed 7th with the scoring four of 33rd Kevin Zolinerczyk; 36th Saul Otteson; 38th Ethan Jones and 41st Joseph Pyke.
U11G team GOLD! For the awesome foursome including individual SILVER for Libby Hale; followed home by 7th Chloe Hartley-Green; 13th Chloe Lewis and 18th Holly Humphreys.
U17M team SILVER for the scoring four of 4th Nathan Jones; 5th Dafyd Jay; 18th William Arnold and 26th Rhys Nicholas.
U17&U20W our 3rd team GOLD of the day with a fine win; it was double GOLD for Ashleigh Willis who had a fine individual win followed home by 8th Beth Thomas; 10th Bronwen Stratton-Thomas and 15th Darcie Bass.
U20M it was individual GOLD for Conor Smith and his team mate Martin Powell was 10th, unfortunately this was an incomplete team, as it was for every other club in this category!
SM & Masters: it was team BRONZE for our SM with 6 to score Dewi Griffiths led the team home with a fine individual win in fact it was his seventh Welsh Cross Country Championship individual victory well done Dewi! He was followed home by; 5th Guy Smith; 23rd Will Munday; 27th Ifan Lloyd; 48th Daniel Morgan & 55th Leigh Fennell. For our Masters there was team GOLD! for the MM40+ with the terrific trio of Charles Walsh, Owen Davies & Martin Slucutt . Team SILVER for our MM45+ with the scoring three of Leigh Fennell, Raul Reismann and Mike Gleeson. A third team medal came with GOLD for our MM55+ Ifan Lloyd; Steve Smith & Thomas Guest, Ifan also won individual GOLD and Steve individual BRONZE in this category. Then we capped the day off with yet another team GOLD this time in the MM60+ age group with the trio of Kneath Philippart, Rob Falconer and Brian Fox, in addition Kneath won individual GOLD and Rob BRONZE to end a fantastic day for the club.

Sunday 24th February the Welsh Masters Athletics Association entered a Wales team into the English Masters Area Challenge which included seven Swansea Harriers representing Wales at Lee Valley. Here is how the magnificent seven got on. MM50+ Paul Flynn did very well to place 6th in the 3000m (10.45.01) despite having run in Pembrey the day before; MW35+ Llinos Jones was 3rd over  1500m in (5.14.02); MW40+ Helen-Marie Davies set a lifetime best in winning the 3000m in (10.59.89); MM50+ Glyn Price was was 5th in the 60m Hurdles (10.98) and 2nd (3.80m) Pole Vault; MM50+ Robin Wood was 1st in the High Jump (1.30m) & 9th (4.63m) Long Jump & 6th (9.94m) Triple Jump; M60+ Roderick Davies 4th (4.04m) Long Jump & 4th (7.07m) Shot and MW60+ Renate Prells 4th (7.48m) Shot. Meanwhile elsewhere; SW Carys Smith throws (36.99m) for the Hammer in Cardiff; SM Nathan James throws the Javelin (61.86m) at Loughborough in some very early outdoor events for 2019.
