Well what another exciting week of athletics action.


Wednesday 13th July saw the conclusion of the West Glamorgan Primary Schools fixtures for the year with the annual Dyfed V West Glamorgan Inter County Match held at Swansea University. It was a successful meeting for West Glamorgan who came out on top reversing the fortunes from the equivalent cross country match with a 160pts to 128pts score line. Very many congratulations to all those athletes who made the team, the two main highlights for Swansea Harriers being individual wins for Freya Morgan (13.9) 70m Hurdles (Penclawdd) and Freya Hannaford (1.27m) High Jump (Oystermouth). It was also pleasing to see so many U17 & U20 athletes from the Swansea and Neath clubs helping officiate at all the three of the Primary Schools finals this year once again and the officers of the schools association would like to pass on their thanks for the athletes support. Wednesday 13th July at the BMC Gold Standard races in Watford, saw Jonathan Tobin break his own all time U20M 1500m club record with a magnificent time of (3.46.34) well done Jonathan! Big brother Paul Tobin also set a life time best of (3.53.67). Click here for the full results.


Saturday 16th July at Cheltenham saw our U13 & U15 team excel by winning the 4th and final match of the Youth Development League and therefore secure their place in the UK Grand Final at Bedford on Saturday 3rd September against the top 8 junior teams in Great Britain. Very many congratulations to every single athlete that has represented the YDL team this season it is indeed a very special achievement and the club is sure that they will be more than competitive at Bedford! Special thanks also to the team managers for their coordination, the coaches in preparing the athletes and to the officials who’ve had a full set of officials points in every match too! Highlights at Cheltenham included overall winning performances from:

Saturday 16th July was the U17 British Schools International held at Ashford, Kent against England, Scotland & Ireland. There were seven Swansea Harriers selected for Wales, congratulations not only on the athletes selection but the fine performances they produced at Ashford helping Wales to 3rd place overall. The magnificent seven were: Dominic Smith (Olchfa) 3000m (9.03.62) BRONZE!; Tomos Slade (Cwmtawe) 100m Hurdles (13.76) 4th in a PB!; Michael Thompson (Bishopston) 400m Hurdles (61.29) 8th; Megan Stratton-Thomas (Olchfa) 3000m Walk (15.20.38) BRONZE!;  Ieuan Hosgood (Bishopston) Pole Vault (3.46m) 8th; Jordan Drasiey (Bishop Vaughan) 4 x 100m and Rhian Evans (Gwyr) Shot (11.34m) 7th and (34.13m) Discus 4th and a PB! On Saturday 16th July Elinor Kirk broke her 5000m personal best at the KBC night of athletics in Heusden, Belgium in a time of (15.37.65) Elinor will need to practice her dip finish with the sprinters in the club as her time was just (0.25) of Caryl Jones all time club record!! Sunday 17th July saw our U17, U20 & Senior Team win the Welsh League fixtures title at Carmarthen, despite fielding a small team due to holidays and clashes with other events the team still prevailed at the end of the match to end the league season at the top of the table, as for the juniors at Cheltenham we must not only thank all the athletes who supported the team but also to the team managers, coaches and officials who all contributed to this magnificent result!! However for the league final for the top 8 teams being held at home in Swansea on Sunday 31st July all points return to zero and the team will have to do it all over again to win the Grand Final, with just two athletes per event and age group permitted please make yourselves available if selected.

SW Katherine Morris (15.93) 100m Hurdles; Sian Swanson (11.24m) Triple Jump; Awen Rosser (12.37m) Shot and Jo Davis (25.96m) Javelin.

U20W Eira James (13.56) 100m & (65.54) 400m and Emily Cockrill (39.42m) Javelin.

U17W Jordan Meek (1.46m) High Jump and Josie Sivak (10.09m) Triple Jump.

Sunday 17th July saw Chris Carpanini win the Micky Morris 10K at Blaenavon, Torfaen in a very fast life time best of (30.18) not too far away from breaking the magic sub 30 barrier! Just behind was Phil Matthews in (32.52) for 5th. Well done to them both, click here for the full results.
