Results Round Up

Sunday 21st October was round 1 of the cross country league at hot and sunny Newbridge Fields Bridgend, incorporated into the match was the West Glamorgan Cross Country Championships.

50th Anniversary Dinner & Club Awards Night

Saturday 27th October saw a 260 sell out for the clubs 50th Anniversary Dinner and awards night at the Marriot Hotel. There were many past, present and future athletes and volunteers there and all had a fantastic evenings celebrations. Our sincere gratitude and thanks goes out to all those who have supported the club in so many different ways for the last 50 years far to many to name them all.

UK Athletics Coaching Assistant Qualification

With close to 100 extra new members joining in the last 2 weeks since training has started back for the U11 to U15 age groups, due to the extra publicity the sport has received since the Olympic Games, it is vital that more parents come forward to offer their help to the lead coaches in sessions to maintain as effective coaching ratios as possible. For the club to continue to thrive and survive we must have more support from parents please.

Weekend Round Up

The sports awards season got underway on Saturday night the first of which was the Welsh Athletics Annual Awards Night held in Cardiff. Swansea Harriers had a very successful night reflecting what a great year the club has had in 2012 in what is also our 50th Anniversary year.

Volunteers Required

Training for the U11, U13 & U15 age groups resumes next week, the club has received well in excess of 200 enquires for membership since the Olympics began! For the club to cope with this potential additional turnout on top of our existing membership next week, it is essential that more parents come forward to volunteer their time so athletes can be coached and team managed effectively and safely. Roles where extra support is required are:

Results Round Up Including Caryl Jones at the World Half Marathon and a World Record!

Caryl Jones

Back on Saturday 22nd September junior throws coach and masters athlete Renate Prells set a new world record in the Masters World Hammer Decathlon Championships at Derby. In the W55 category Renate threw 10 different hammer weights ranging from 2kg to 12.5kg to set a new World Record of 3701 points. Very many congratulations to Renate on a great days work and her world record!

Results Round Up and Yet More Success For Caryl Jones

Sunday 16th September saw Caryl Jones who is having a fantastic 2012 in the BUPA Great North Run at Newcastle Caryl was the 8th female overall and 3rd British athlete home up against some world class Kenyans. Caryl set a new personal best by nearly 3 minutes in a time of 71.18, this takes Caryl to 17th on the UK all time list and 2nd on the Welsh All Time list.

Dave Jessett Olympic & Paralympic Experiences

We are very lucky to have one of the UK's top officials in the club; Dave Jessett, Dave has officiated at the highest possible levels and can often be found week in week out judging in grassroots athletics events too supporting and mentoring the volunteer officials in the club. Dave was very deservedly chosen to officiate in London for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has written an article for us on his experiences . . . . .
