Saturday 9th April was the UK 12-stage road relays at Sutton Park. The return of the national 12-stage relay – now officially designated the UK championship – after a two-year break because of the pandemic, meant a welcome reappearance for the Harriers at the iconic Sutton Park venue, where 73 men’s teams contested a thrilling race. Several clubs, Swansea among them, were without key men for a variety of reasons, which provided a key test of strength in depth and the Harriers came through this test commendably by finishing a creditable seventh. An added challenge was provided by the fact that six of the team were making their first appearance in this race – significant because of the unusual nature of this testing, switchback course. Injuries and illness since Christmas also meant that many members of the team had less than ideal preparation in terms of training and racing. With many clubs putting their star men on the first two of three legs, the race only really began to take shape on the fourth stage, with one of the Swansea debutants, Morgan Davies, moving Swansea through from 24th to 19th. Then came a big move with Dewi Griffiths pulling up a further 10 places. Dewi, who has had a rocky time with health issues for some time, showed he is gradually getting back to form and fitness with one of the fastest times of the day – only his fourth fastest time round the course, but a fine run in the circumstances, nonetheless. From then onward we fluctuated between eighth and ninth before Jack Turner picked off the Southampton runner on the last leg to ensure seventh place. Up front Tonbridge AC overtook Highgate Harriers in the last mile, eventually winning by just 13 seconds over almost four-and-a-quarter hours of running.
Result: 1st Tonbridge AC 4 hours 13 minutes 11 seconds, 2nd Highgate Harriers 4-13-24, 3rd Bedford AC 4-14-25. 7th Swansea Harriers 4-19-08. Click here for the full team and individual results.
